Guernsey: St.Andrew

St. Andrew's is Guernsey’s only land-locked parish and has a picturesque village. Here, the norm is quiet idyll and in these picturesque valleys and woodlands peace and tranquillity reign. There are some excellent examples of historical architecture to be found in the Talbot valley. What attracts most people to St. Andrew’s however is the sight of ‘The Little Chapel' at Vauxbelets. This is probably the smallest chapel in the world and was created by Brother Deodat Antoine, a De La Salle Monk who, inspired by the Basilica of our Lady of Lourdes, at Lourdes in the Pyrenees, dedicated his life’s work to creating this replica of breathtaking construction. As he neared completion of the work, war broke out. Brother Deodat returned to his native France never to return to Guernsey and died during 1951. His work was completed by Monks from Les Vauxbelets Monastery at the top of the valley from the Chapel. The most fascinating aspect of Brother Deodat’s construction is that the outer finish is made entirely from countless seashells and ormer shells, pieces of broken glass, pottery and crockery. These were sent by people from all over the island and worldwide; even Wedgewood contributed!
